Morning Session (11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.)

"Donor Advised Funds = Dream Advised Funds"

This presentation on Donor Advised Funds (DAF) will cover what they are and the variety of ways one can access them. It will compare how they differ from private foundations and ways they can compliment one another. For philanthropists big and small, understanding the utility of DAFs and their accessibility can spur current giving activity as "Dream Advised Funds".

Illustrative story examples will touch upon changing demographics and how to resonate with their needs. With the change in the tax code, our nation is still digesting its impact. Being able to embrace the conversation about DAFs and give strategic guidance on their utility, will keep you on the side of the donor. DAFs can widen access to philanthropists if understood and welcomed.

Speaker:

Monique Castillo is a financial advisor. Her work is defined by the goals her clients set for themselves. Whether is it opening a Donor Advised Fund, ABLE account or establishing an investment portfolio to fund a dream or goal, it is part of her practice to guide her clients through tools and strategies that will help them efficiently attain their goals.

Monique is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and taught English in China as a Princeton-in-Asia Fellow. She speaks Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and functional Portuguese. As a Financial Advisor, she holds the Series 7 and 66 Licenses and am licensed as an agent for life, health, accident and long-term-care insurance. Monique’s licensing enables me to provide full-service investment portfolio management and financial planning so my clients can plan well for their goals in every chapter of life. Whether it is an individual, company or an institution looking to take it to the next level, attain higher ground, she is happy to assist with that goal and welcome the invitation.

"Navigating the Hurdles to Conversational Gift Planning"

There are two critical moments in building a donor relationship, even for the most experienced major gift planner. The first is when you invite your prospect to transition from an emotional discussion of your nonprofit to an actionable gift conversation. The second happens once your prospect identifies an appealing gift purpose, offering you the opportunity to invite an in-depth exploration of the best way to say ‘yes.’

This is where too many fundraisers settle on what’s comfortable and safe, where the major gift officer asks for the pre-determined, rated gift capacity amount, where the planned giving specialist suggests a legacy or estate gift. Both approaches leave gifts on the table.

The effective charitable gift planner will intentionally invite a conversation about HOW the gift plan might be structured – when, with what assets, and in conjunction with other personal considerations the future donor will share.

This mini-workshop introduces tools you can use immediately to negotiate these hurdles. You will learn how to identify the gift plan that’s available, whether it’s outright, testamentary, or provides someone an income stream. You will learn the power of multi-part gift planning. The workshop includes two practice exercises, introducing a proven structure and a language that can be introduced at each key juncture in the relationship.

Dan Shephard, Principal, The Shepard Group

Dan Shephard is Principal of The Shephard Group, which provides training, coaching, and consulting services focused on the skillsets most valuable to frontline fundraisers. A veteran of the not-for-profit sector since 1986, Dan knows from personal experience the value to the charitable gift planner of being equipped with both the competence and the confidence to engage a potential donor in a discussion that will result in a significant gift commitment.

He is the creator of The Four Decisions – How to Lead Your Donor to Each, which serves as the foundation of his training programs on conversational gift planning. He has taught hundreds of fundraising professionals at such nonprofits as Columbia University, Cornell University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Florida International University, and the Smithsonian Institution.

Dan began his fundraising career in the performing arts. He served as Director of Development for The Fulton Opera House, New American Theatre, and Pittsburgh Public Theatre.

During his time in higher education he served as Planned Giving Director for the Florida State University Foundation, Director of Development for the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, Director of Gift Planning for The Citadel Foundation, and Director of Development for the Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University.
