Key Strategies for Estate & Retirement Planning: Essentials Every Fundraiser Must Know

Gain a solid foundation in estate and retirement planning essentials tailored for Planned Giving and fundraising professionals. Drawing on 30 years of experience as an attorney and gift planning consultant, this session demystifies the key strategies most adults over 55 should consider, from wills and trusts to charitable bequests and tax-efficient giving. Equip yourself with the knowledge to engage donors effectively and guide them in creating impactful legacy gifts while addressing their personal financial goals.

Jonathan Gudema, Esq. has 30 years of experience working with and advising non-profit organizations on planned gift arrangements and tax-advantaged charitable estate planning options.  An attorney by training, and still an in-house attorney for a family wealth office, Jonathan has played key roles in helping non-profit organizations manage planned giving programs, working with staff, donors and their advisors in cultivating and closing significant planned gifts. Prior to founding Planned Giving Advisors in 2011, Jonathan was a Managing Director at Changing our World, the third largest U.S. based fundraising consulting firm. As a member of the firm’s senior management team he led consulting projects and outsourced the planned giving staff for several major clients. Jonathan has also held senior positions in planned giving at the Anti-Defamation League, United Jewish Communities and Continuum Health Partners where he was responsible for cultivating planned gifts and managing their planned giving programs.  Jonathan is also the author of The Planned Giving Blog (www.plannedgivingadvisors.com), which provides news and commentary on the field of planned giving with over 1,850 subscribers and 250,000 visitors since its launch in 2010. In 2014, Jonathan launched the Planned Giving Boot Camp, a webinar series which has already trained over 5,000 fundraisers in the basics of planned giving as well as several more advanced training sessions.  Jonathan earned a B.A. in Political Science from Rutgers University in 1990 and a J.D. from Western New England College School of Law in 1994.

Luncheon Session
12:15 - 2:00 p.m.
Women and Philanthropy

The data on women and philanthropy reminds fundraisers to focus on this category of donors – but is there anything unique about how we build authentic, long-term, productive relationships with female donors?

There’s an especially interesting opportunity among Baby Boomer women, many of whom are working through the same issue: having accumulated more wealth than expected, their planning passes more assets to their heirs than they’d prefer. This generation has fewer nonprofit connections than the generations before or after it, so there’s great opportunity today for planned giving professionals to help these prospective donors solve a unique estate planning problem.

In addition, we’ll explore current giving trends among women who have access to wealth, touching on values, strategic philanthropy, collaborative giving, use of advisors (both financial and philanthropic), multi-generational engagement, stewardship goals and more, as well as considerations for how to leverage our roles as philanthropic advisors and our organizations to help more women build their wealth.

M. Angle Flores, CSPG has over two decades of experience working with and within organizations across all nonprofit sectors. As a Senior Vice President with CCS, Angel is a highly motivated, results-oriented, and compassionate executive. She has advised organizations and planned and managed campaigns ranging from $20 million to $4 billion. She has extensive expertise and experience managing strategic operations, planning and directing large-scale capital and comprehensive campaigns, incorporating gift planning strategies, refining major gift programs, and building and fostering positive cultures of philanthropy.

Elizabeth Baran Wagner is Senior Vice President and Director of Institutional Wealth Management for Bryn Mawr Trust, where she leads the endowment, foundation and charitable practice and the firm's Investment Policy Committee. She has over two decades of experience advising nonprofit organizations toward long-term sustainability, and building charitable solutions for high net worth individuals and families. The firm's institutional clients count on her advice on issues regarding endowment investing, mission-aligned investment choices and related issues, and she works closely with growing organizations to ensure their investment policies support their goals.
